A #Tardis key

A #Tardis key

A friend of mine from work is a huge Dr Who fan. Saying that is a gross understatement. He is the biggest Dr Who fan I know. So when he sends an email asking if anyone knows a Dr Who prop and what episode it’s from, I know it’s going to be good. He sends me a picture of a Tardis key he saw online. I immediately jump onto the internet and start doing my search.

I found two websites that had a good deal of information on Tardis keys. The first is The Tardis Index File. It is a wiki site that covers Dr Who, Torchwood, The Sara Jane Adventures and K9. It is updated and supported by its fans.  I found a page dedicated to the Tardis key. The section of the page going into the history of its design I found very interesting.  It gives a small history of the design changes as the various Doctors have changed it.

And Here I Sit aka #CommutefromHell

And Here I Sit aka #CommutefromHell

Light Rail CommuteIt’s no secret that I have a horror commute. At best it’s four hours a day. On a bad day it’s six. Worst case scenario, let’s just say I have a plan involving a sofa at a friend’s house near where I work. I have few things that I enjoy during this time. I love my music. My iPhone has saved countless people from my ire sitting on the train. I love my Nook by Barnes & Noble. I’m currently at the end of the fourth and final book in the Inheritance Cycle by Paolini. My iPad with its applications, dropbox, and Bookman application that allows me to read things from ebooks, to PDF’s, to comics.  I will submerge myself in the distraction so that I don’t have to hear everyone else’s business as they converse all around me.

From the #CoffeeUp with the @CoffeeCouple

by Gservo

As my current coffee supply runs low, it is now time to do my first solo roast. I will be using the skills I learned from the Coffee Couple. They are one of my favorite coffee roasters, and you should give them a try.

How do you deal with problem people at work?

How do you deal with problem people at work?

We all have to deal with them…the problem person! Who is the problem person you ask? He or she is that person who, for whatever reason, has to give you that little bit of attitude or angst. They may be the person who doesn’t understand something and as you try to explain it, tells you that you are wrong. That person who argues points to unimportant items. That person who want sall of the attention and wants none of the work. I can go on and on about the types of problem persons, but I won’t. We all can compile our own lists very easily.

G.W.Bush’s head found in Game of Thrones Season 1 Blu Ray

G.W.Bush’s head found in Game of Thrones Season 1 Blu Ray

Game of Thrones S1 George W Bush's Head

If you haven’t yet heard, HBO is discontinuing the Game of Thrones Season 1 Blu Ray and reissuing it. The reason? The head of George W Bush is on a spike with long hair!

In the commentary on the Blu Ray, the show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss point out the former president’s head. In a later statement, they explain that they do not create body part props for every scene and show. Instead, they rent in bulk from a company. No one caught the image of George “Dubya” until afterward. It was also a mistake to point this fact out in the commentray, actions they repeatedly apologized for.

Snow White & the Huntsman

Snow White & the Huntsman

I recently saw Snow White & the Huntsman.  I have mixed feelings about the movie and on this take of the fairy tale. Quick plot summary: Snow White is the daughter of a slain king. She is imprisoned by the Kings murderer the new Queen. She escapes and they employ a Huntsman to capture her. Things happen along the way introducing the cast of characters we know from the story.

I hate YouTube on mobile devices

I hate YouTube on mobile devices

We’ve all done it. We’ve all used YouTube to find a song or official video of that one thing we just can’t get out of our heads. I use it mostly to show my daughter that her bands today didn’t invent allof these cool songs they keep covering. I also torture her with songs from “my day”. My day being the 90′s & early 2000′s most of the time.

So now here’s the problem. We’ve turned into a mobile device carrying society. The majority of the time I have my iPhone or iPad in hand. I rarely turn on my laptop or desktop unless there is serious work to be done. Try to find an official video from a band that will play! It’s frustrating to no end! I’ve ran into this a few times now. I use Google to look up a song. I can find the video I want but it will not play on a mobile device. I look up the same video on the YouTube app on  my device only to find every cover, parody or live version ever created. Seriously??? I can care less about your drum cover of the song, you lip syncing horribly to it or how you think you cleverly changed some words around to make fun of Harry Potter.

Try this exercise. Look up Click Click Boom by Saliva. If you are on your desktop or laptop, you will find the official video first link. Now try to find it on your smart phone. the same video.

Good luck.

In conclusion, YouTube mobile is absolutely horrible. YouTube itself is a far cry from the useful tool it once was. What made it so great so many years ago is the very thing killing it, in my opinion. If a band has a multimedia page on their website, I now go there first versus YouTube. Someone should convince them to setup categories like official, parody & covers that you can use to narrow down your searches. They should but I doubt it.

5 Social Media Mistakes to Stop Making At Work via Forbes.com

5 Social Media Mistakes to Stop Making At Work via Forbes.com

This is an artocle posted on Forbes.com by contributor Kelly Clay. I think this is a subject that needs to be constantly addressed so it’s being reposted here.

Social media is a critical component of maintaining relationships with colleagues, friends, and family. But is using social media at work causing you to make costly mistakes? John Pirc, security researcher and Director of Product Management for HP TippingPoint and co-author of Cybercrime and Espionage, recently spoke about the risks of social networking in the enterprise at HP Discover in Las Vegas. During HP Discover, Pirc was interviewed by Seattle tech blogger, Jake Ludington, about the kinds of risks posed by social media and how those risks can be mitigated. Pirc outlines several social media mistakes that many people make on a daily basis at work that can be damaging to both their careers and their company. (The full interview is also available to watch.)

Don’t Check-In Everywhere, All-The-Time. Geolocation apps like Foursquare are popular, especially at locations offering rewards and discounts for check-ins. Pirc warns that those who use these apps should be wary about using them all the time, particularly when visiting locations for business purposes. Employees should avoid checking in to protect all parties involved, especially when they may be negotiatiating mergers, acquisitions, or competitive projects.

Quick thoughts on troublesome executives

Quick thoughts on troublesome executives

Or Dealing with executive who create an uncomfortable work environment.

When working in a corporate environment, there is a time when a person is hired, and they begin their reign by making people uncomfortable.  They have their goals, or feel entitled to make changes to the status quo or they can become unrealistically demanding. They tend not to care how their actions affect those below their pay scale. They can be slightly bullyish  at times .

The question I’ve been asking myself is ‘How do I navigate my working day to stay…. Safe. The goal is not to get fired. It’s a tough economy and finding a new job after being fired, even as a geek,  is no fun.

In September, DC Comics publishes zero issues of the New 52, to celebrate the year anniversary of the revamp. Some books however, it seems, may not make it that far. Justice League International #12 will be the last issue of the series. (via DC Cancels Justice League International With Issue 12 | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors)
